Diaspora

An exhibition by Josephine Fagan

Part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival

Diaspora, an installation of over 1500 handmade ceramic vessels, represents the perilous journey of Syrian refugees attempting the sea crossing from Turkey to Greece. The audience is invited to bring a small item to swap with pieces of the artwork, taking the artwork home. Through this exchange, the vessels are dispersed throughout our community in a gesture recognising the precious lives lost and supporting those still seeking safe passage.

The artist invites you to participate in the exchange of the artwork at the official opening on Saturday 16 September 4 - 5.30pm and from then on until the close of the exhibition on 30 September.

Diaspora is an installation of over 1500 handmade ceramic vessels arranged on the gallery floor in a symbolic representation of the perilous journey of Syrian refugees attempting the sea crossing from Turkey to Greece. Each vessel is individually glazed and some contain glass in ultramarine, aquamarine and crimson. The audience is invited to bring with them an object to swap with pieces of the artwork, taking the artwork home. Through this exchange, the vessels are dispersed throughout our community in a gesture of recognition for the precious lives lost and support for those still seeking safe passage to a better life.

The artwork was inspired by the artist’s six-week residency on the Greek island of Skopelos and her time in Athens where she was investigating cross cultural symbols of belief, luck, loss, transition and travel. During that time over 300 000 Syrian refugees attempted to cross the Aegean Sea from Turkey to the Islands of Kos and Lesvos. Diaspora is an artwork that invites the Melbourne community to acknowledge the plight of these dispossessed individuals.
